Start working on the project in your assigned groups by answering these guiding questions:

I. Art Historical Research

  1. Who was Andy Warhol? How did his work influence the art world and popular culture? Identify and investigate at least five artists whom Warhol has influenced.
  2. Who is Shepard Fairey? Describe where and how he started his art career. How has his work evolved through today?

II. Prosecution and Defense of Appropriation in Art

  1. What is the fair-use section of United States copyright law? What does it state in reference to image appropriation in the arts and humanities?
  2. What was the premise of the lawsuit that the Associated Press brought against Shepard Fairey in response to his Obama campaign poster, Hope?
  3. Did the Hope poster have an impact on Mr. Obama's 2008 presidential campaign? Did campaign involvement influence the court's perception of Fairey as an artist?

III. Street Art

  1. Where and when did the first instance of "street art" occur? Provide a brief outline of the history of street art (results will vary according to source).
  2. Can you find at least four examples of contemporary street art and the artists who create it?
  3. What are some of the methods employed by these artists, and what does the subject matter consist of?
  4. In what way does this research relate to your own experience of the urban environment?

Next, use the facts uncovered in your prosecution/defense research to formulate an argument either in favor of or against appropriation. Try to anticipate your opponents' disagreements and develop counterpoints to defend your position. Provide an opportunity for each group member to contribute during the mock trial presentation. Be sure to cite at least three sources from your research.

Finally, generate possible topics for the collaborative street art project. Share your ideas during a teacher-led group discussion. As a class, vote on the best theme and technique. Individually, assemble three sources you would like to include in the group project, and consider how to best convey your vision as it relates to the work as a whole. Work on the piece as a group during class time.
