As a child,I learned to make pysanky, or traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs, from my paternal grandfather. This folk art form dates from pre-Christian times, and originally celebrated the joyful return of the Sun after winter's darkness. Many pagan tendencies still inform Ukrainian Christianity to this day, this tradition being one of them. Here's to religious superimposition! One of my roles in the family is to perpetuate such traditions. One day I wish to pass this ritual on to my descendants.
